The Yellowtail are Still Here!

¡Hola from El Sargento!

We’ve returned to Baja after three weeks in the US and are glad to report that Chay got in the water on Saturday and is back out there again today! We are having Yellowtail sashimi and Cabrilla (al mojo de ajo) for dinner tonight. Love fishing/spearing the Baja!

It was a great experience to travel to Ft. Lauderdale for the Blue Wild expo, first time to Florida, and first time to attend a trade show. It was a good learning experience and I am grateful for the chance to share a booth with Chris (Chaput of and learn how it’s done. He and Bryan Johnson know all about connecting with the crowd and showed me the ropes. You can check out a photo of the booth below. Met a lot of great guys and had a chance to find out what it is like to be on the other side of the continent. What little I saw of Florida was beautiful.

The Fred Hall expo in Long Beach was quite a bit bigger than the Florida show and another good learning experience. In addition to the Sea Sniper crew, Amadeo (Bachar) of and Josh of were nearby with lots of beautiful art, good gear and rigging, etc., so there was plenty to see and do with friends. It was fun to see some familiar faces visiting the show as well as meeting many new spearos and fishermen. We are looking forward to a busy year!

In Honor of Daniel

As we began preparing this message on Saturday, we received a call about the passing of our beloved friend, Daniel Van Huyssteen. To say it was devastating is an understatement. He was a healthy vital young man with so much life and love to share. Daniel was one of the original founders of Sea Sniper along with Chay and Chris Chaput. He was more than a cherished friend, devoted family man and all around classic gentleman. He exemplified what it is to be a genuinely caring, loving human being. It is impossible to find words to express whom he was and how much he will be missed by all who knew him. So we will take a moment here to honor him in simply saying, “You were an inspiration who will always be loved and appreciated for the qualities you shared so generously with this world. Rest in peace dear friend.”

Fish Report

This time of year the wind begins to settle down and the Yellowtail are THICK. Some Wahoo and Marlin are already moving in also. Saw some good Pargos and Cabrilla on the reef, too. The water is still a little chilly ~ definitely a 5mil suit for me.
– Cheers, Chay
